My name is Catherine Nugent, I live in Victoria Australia. I've been studying parelli natural horsemanship for the past 3 years.

This blog is a dedication to my journey to becoming a Parelli Professional. To document my thoughts, ideas, ups & downs as they happen.

In the words of Linda Parelli "get your goal, Keep it & protect it." This is where I will do this.

My Journey To Becoming a Horsewomen

I know I will hit a lot of roadblocks on the way to becoming a horsewomen. But I choose to go to the top & be the very best that I can be.

I know there will be no problems along my the way; only new solutions to find & that I need to think about where I want to go, and who I want to be; think about all the baby steps on the way & every day- work on those.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

OF THE WEEK

* If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten

* Every day I welcome myself to a new level of incompetence
* If your horses says 'no', you either asked the wrong question, or asked the question wrong
* Cause your idea to become his idea, but understand his idea FIRST
* Your horse can only be as brave as you are
* Do it FOR the horse, not TO him
* Natural-Horse-Man-Ship is so old, its new again
* Don't learn the tricks of the Trade, Learn the Trade
* Take the time it takes, so it takes less time
* Trust that he'll respond, but be ready to correct- NOT more one than the other!
* Horses don't need training, they need good leadership
* Horses don't wear wrist watches
* If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything

I over did things last weekend! Archie wanted nothing to do with me after it! I got completely snobbed...

I spent Saturday arvo just hanging out in the paddock- Syd just hung out with Diablo and I while we played friendly game with his legs, then a little porcupine. This is about our 14th session in a row, were I've just been rubbing his legs, trying to get some genuine relaxation. I vowed not to move on until he is complete relaxed at this stage. He can go RBI when I handle his legs. About thirty minutes later Archie couldn't stand it any longer- he had to come over to see what we were doing. So I gave him a Carrot & went to leave. He followed me to the gate and started to strike at the gate latch- so following his lead- I haltered him and we went for a mossy across the front yard. It was so worth the wait!!! He was with me the whole time- always had an eye on me, and didn't just LEAVE for the patch of grass on the other side of the lawn, he waited and followed my lead.

I went to a barefoot trimming clinic with Andrew Bowe on the Sunday- that was fantastic!

Monday I had a similar morning- Archie decided Everything in the paddock was more interesting than me- so I played that game too- I hung out with Diablo & Syd. I started to play stick to me with Diablo, over and around all the equipment in the playground, and within about three seconds I had Diablo at my sholder, Syd tagging along behind him and, despite himself, Archie bring up the rear! It was so funny!

We then all hung out at the barrels in the paddock. I rubbed Diablo's legs and for the FIRST TIME EVER!! he cocked his leg, lowed his head & completely relaxed while I rubbed them down! So Proud!

Archie followed me to the gate again and so we when out for another mossy. I didn't ask anything of him, just that he stay with me and tune into my body language- which he did fantastically. We're back in the right track! We played with the float that afternoon- doing everything BUT loading in the float- which is exactly what he expected me to do! So it was a great exercise for us to do! For my nerves and for engaging his mind!

All round a great weekend!
